Mid season update 20051st Jun 2005 “To all those caught by the fly” The mid season update for those of you who may have been or are pending a trip out has been sporadic . May felt like it was blowing force 5-6 all month but we still ended up with over 300 fish ,,,, 6% were above 36cms and a few pushing 4lbs which was good to see very early on in the season . June gave us three weeks of sweltering conditions with a number of very windy days but generally a good month with over 500 Bass taken but the percentage of mature fish dropped to 5% , nothing over 3lbs , this was a shame as there was a very large shoal of fish which a number of clients hooked into which came in late on the flood and started to offer up better fish just at the end of the session as we were running out of wading depth – but I guess that’s fishing . Now July has been a complete rogue so far , nearly all the School Bass which were offering up sport all season seemed to have moved further into the harbour . Whether this is a function of the better Bass moving in is yet unclear but since the first week of July we’ve lost good quality fish on the west channel towards Hayling island (8lbs plus) and landed fish to 7 ½ lbs which is better than last season already . The clarity is allowing us to use clousers with light hackles and even tempt the better predators with poppers . Keep your fingers crossed the heat continues as it’s only a matter of time until we land a double figured specimen . To those of you who maybe fishing on other marks it’s worth noting an interesting observation when stripping in – I’ve found that a feeding fish will *strike you from either side of your fly* (i.e hit you broadside) , whilst an inquisitive fish will normally follow from behind out of instinct but turn off at the last moment – If you’re interested in coming out please see dates below and for those of you who are pending their guiding trip I look forward to seeing you shortly .
